About Tadashi Yamaguchi

Tadashi Yamaguchi is a first year at Karasuno High School and a member of the volleyball team. Yamaguchi is the only first year who does not play as a starting member. As a result, he took on extra training to become the team's pinch server.

About Tadashi Yamaguchi: Background

Yamaguchi is generally nice, hardworking, but also shy and prone to stage fright. Above all else, Yamaguchi is incredibly loyal, often joining and supporting anything his best friend, Kei Tsukishima, does. He is also in the same advanced class as Tsukishima and occasionally helps tutor Shoyo Hinata and Tobio Kageyama.

In elementary school, Yamaguchi suffered bullying from his classmates due to his freckles and sensitive nature. He attached himself to Tsukishima to avoid more teasing, instead mocking others alongside his friend. Through developing his serving technique, Yamaguchi gradually becomes more confident on his own. By the time Karasuno reaches Nationals, Yamaguchi no longer dreads the challenge of serving. Instead, he welcomes his time in the spotlight.

About Tadashi Yamaguchi: Abilities

Unlike his fellow first years, Yamaguchi initially lacks stand-out ability in volleyball. Overall, his attacking skills are average and his defensive skills are underdeveloped. Not wanting to get left behind, Yamaguchi honed a specific skill: his serves.

Yamaguchi's primary weapon is his jump float serve. With a jump float serve, the ball lacks spin, giving it the appearance of floating through the air. Without the spin, the ball also appears to suddenly drop, making it difficult to receive. Over time, Yamaguchi further develops his aim. This gives him the ability to target specific players, skim the ball over the net, and land near the court boundaries.

Other Important Haikyu!! Characters

Yamaguchi mostly interacts with the other first years, especially Tsukishima. However, he turned outside of the volleyball team to develop his skills with a member of the Neighborhood Association Team, Makoto Shimada.

Kei Tsukishima

Kei Tsukishima is a fellow first year at Karasuno High School and a middle blocker on the volleyball team. Tsukishima is sarcastic, taunting, and seemingly apathetic toward volleyball. His height gives him an advantage when blocking. His analytical nature makes him a greater threat when he starts read blocking.

Yamaguchi met Tsukishima through youth volleyball. Due to his impressive height, Tsukishima scared off Yamaguchi's bullies. The two continued to play volleyball together through middle school as a hobby. After starting high school, their relationship strained due to Tsukishima's indifference toward his progress on the team. As they grow as players, Tsukishima and Yamaguchi form a powerful serve and block offensive duo.

Makoto Shimada

Makoto Shimada is a former student of Karasuno High School and current supermarket employee. Shimada played volleyball in high school during Karasuno's years as a powerhouse team. Like Yamaguchi, Shimada was not a regular player and spent most of his time off the court. He managed to earn playtime by working on his serves.

Yamaguchi turns to Shimada after Karasuno's practice match with the Neighborhood Association Team. Reluctant at first, Shimada teaches Yamaguchi the basic techniques of a jump float serve behind his shop. He offers Yamaguchi tips on calming his nerves, such as picking a focal point to mentally reset between serves. Shimada attends nearly all of Karasuno's official matches and shares Yamaguchi's terror when Yamaguchi gets subbed in.
